How each heater works
Cozy Cove Pro is a ceramic heater. Electricity warms a ceramic PTC element, and a small fan moves air across it and out into the room. Because it heats air directly, you start to feel warmth quickly, in about 5 minutes.
An oil-filled heater works differently. Electricity heats oil sealed inside metal fins. The oil warms the fins, and the fins slowly radiate heat into the room. There's no fan, so it's silent, but it takes much longer to get going. Once warm, it keeps giving off heat for a while after you turn it off.
Speed: minutes vs. a long warm-up
If you walk into a cold bedroom or office and want it comfortable soon, speed matters. That's where a ceramic heater shines. Oil heaters are better suited to being switched on early and left running for long stretches.
Running cost: it's about watts
Ceramic and oil heaters both turn nearly all the electricity they use into heat, so the cost comes down to wattage and hours. Cozy Cove Pro runs at 400W or 800W, about 6.8¢ or 13.6¢ an hour at 17¢ per kWh. A 1,500W oil heater costs about 25.5¢ an hour at full power. These are examples; your rate and usage change the result.
Weight, space and placement
Many oil-filled heaters are heavy, floor-standing units that need clear space around them. Cozy Cove Pro weighs 2.7 lb and can go on a wall or tabletop, which keeps floors clear in small bedrooms, offices and apartments. See the full specifications for sizes.
Safety
Both types can be used safely when you follow the instructions. Cozy Cove Pro has overheat auto shut-off. Oil heater fins can get hot to the touch, which matters around kids and pets. For any heater, keep it clear of curtains and bedding, plug it directly into a wall outlet and don't leave it unattended. Read the safety guide.
